Indianapolis…Emmis Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: EMMS) today announced the hiring of Barry Mayo as Senior Vice President/Market Manager of Emmis-New York.
“We anticipated the very best candidates making themselves available for this premier position – and we were right,” Emmis Radio President Rick Cummings said. “Barry was one of the original architects of Kiss, New York 20 years ago. He knows the market and he knows the three Emmis stations there. He’s been an innovative programmer, a general manager for 12 years, and an owner. He’s a great strategist and his staffs have always loved working for him. He’s a winner who will have immediate impact for Emmis.”
Mayo has served as a consultant for Emmis’ WRKS since February. His experience in New York includes serving as Assistant Program Director of WXLO/WRKS (1981-83); as Program Director of WRKS (1983-84); and as Vice President/General Manager of WRKS (1984-88). In 1988 he co-founded Broadcasting Partners Incorporated (BPI), where he served as President until 1995. BPI, which went public in 1993, began as a five-station group that grew to eleven. Also during this time Mayo served as President/General Manager of WVAZ in Chicago. Since 1995, he has been president of Mayomedia, a media consulting company specializing in advising clients on programming, format changes, sales, internet programming and affiliate marketing.
Mayo, 50, succeeds Judy Ellis, who announced in October that she would not seek to renew her contract beyond its February 28, 2003 expiration date.
“I’m thrilled to be associated with this company,” Mayo said. “In New York City, Emmis has some of the most dynamic and attractive properties in all of radio. It is my job to increase the value of these properties in the service of our listeners, our advertisers, and our shareholders. I’ve inherited a great staff of people from Judy, and I look forward to raising the bar as high as possible.”
Emmis-New York includes WQCD-FM (CD101.9), WQHT-FM (Hot97) and WRKS-FM (KISS FM).
